AAUI Ethernet port on Mac Centris 650?

I have a Mac Centris 650 with a AAUI Ethernet port.  I have loaded
Debian 2.1 m68k but the message "eth0: transmit timed out" is displayed
periodically, and the system cannot connect to other systems on the
network.

Has anyone got the AAUI Ethernet port to work?  If so, is there special
configuration needed?
