I've had the same kind of problem back in August with single layer dvd+r.

Now, I have a working setup with:
- growisofs 5.21
- firmware 1.58 (you have 1.57)
- kernel 2.6.14 (also works with 2.6.11)

Beware that I can no longer read the badly recorded dvd on my pioneer
drive. (but I can read them on an HP dvd writer, go figure).
