I want to clarify this situation a little further. Without upgrading the
firmware to 3.00 on this drive, I was completely unable to successfully
format a dvd+rw disc. The process detected the media, began, but failed
giving an error I don't recall now.

The moral of this, is to upgrade the firmware immediately otherwise
formatting won't even work.

I agree, I was just desperate to get a burn to work.

It wasn't clear that I could just growisofs to write data to a DVD+R.
I'll try this when I get another burner.
