I appreciate the additional info. I picked the drive up on the condition that the retailer will take it back within 30 days as long as all the contents are returned. I am permitted to try it out.
I installed the drive, but cdrecord --scanbus does not see it. I see the following in the boot log though:
hdd: GENERIC DVD DUAL 4xMax, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive . . hdd: attached ide-cdrom driver hdd: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 8192kB CacheThere's also a cd burner at /dev/hdc which is identified by cdrecord --scanbus
If I use 'dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/hdd' with a blank dvd-r in the drive, I do get a host of information, including identification of a blank disk in the drive.
