Dear marketing / publicity / press / ...,
I can't find any past discussion on the subject of having blog.d.o, so
I'm looking forward to your opinions on the matter.
I think we should have an official Debian blog, to complement the
wonderful job currently done by the press team with official press
releases. The two are not overlapping as it is well-known that the
communication registry of blogs and of press releases is significantly
different; we are good at the latter, but we completely lack the former.
Another reason for having one, would be to aggregate various similar
initiatives that we currently have, but which can probably benefit of
some synergies. Here I'm thinking not only at news.debian.net (mainly
maintained by Ana, Bcc:-ed), but also as initiatives like the Debian
Developer interviews by Adrian von Bidder (Bcc:-ed as well) which
struggled to survive and IIRC encounter some technical problems with
times.debian.net.
What do you think of concentrating all the above in a single,
forthcoming, blog.d.o service?
Ideally, I believe that such a blog should be (as a concept) a
multi-author blog accepting contributed posts from Debian developers and
contributors in general. Still, that should not come with the cost of a
too varied (i.e. absent) editorial line. So, ideally, what I think would
be nice to have is post submissions by different authors, reviewed and
approved by the press team or by someone of their choice (after all they
are already delegated to communicate on behalf of Debian ...). Of course
I'll be happy to consider enlarging the team for this purpose, if the
idea is welcome.
I've a proposal on how to implement this technically (fulfilling various
requirements, including the non-welcome-ness of insecure web apps on
debian.org machines), but I refrain to advance them now. I think it
would be better to discuss the idea first, from a pure communication
point of view, and only then delve into the technical details.
