At some point I had access to three 43p-140 systems. I remember that
openSuSE 10.0 and maybe also 10.1/SLES10 worked well. Due to time
constraints I did not test newer releases, because PReP support was also
removed from the kernel sources due to the ppc32/ppc64 merge.
Maybe you can find a copy of those older SuSE releases and try the
zImage.prep image. There could be still a SLES10-GA CD1 image somewhere
on the novell.com website.
