Package: apt Version: 2.6.1 Severity: important X-Debbugs-Cc: jleivent@comcast.net Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? I have a systemd service that does upgrades during shutdown. It stalled while attempting to do the upgrade to 12.1. The service is a oneshot remain-after-exit type that uses ExecStop to run a script containing the following: export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt update apt upgrade -y -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confdef" -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confold" apt autoremove -y When attempted the upgrade to 12.1, it got to the following point: Setting up libsystemd-shared:amd64 (252.12-1~deb12u1) ... Setting up systemd (252.12-1~deb12u1) ... Installing new version of config file /etc/systemd/system.conf ... and then stalled. I tried switching to a different console, but that did not work and the machine became completely unresponsive. Was this some kind of deadlock between the install and the systemd service performing it? If we are not supposed to use systemd services to do unattended upgrades at shutdown, what works instead? * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I had to do a hardware reboot. Then I did apt update and apt upgrade by hand. * What was the outcome of this action? Seems OK now. -- Package-specific info: -- apt-config dump -- APT ""; APT::Architecture "amd64"; APT::Build-Essential ""; APT::Build-Essential:: "build-essential"; APT::Install-Recommends "true"; APT::Install-Suggests "0"; APT::Sandbox ""; APT::Sandbox::User "_apt"; APT::Authentication ""; APT::Authentication::TrustCDROM "true"; APT::NeverAutoRemove ""; APT::NeverAutoRemove:: "^firmware-linux.*"; APT::NeverAutoRemove:: "^linux-firmware$"; APT::NeverAutoRemove:: "^linux-image-[a-z0-9]*$"; APT::NeverAutoRemove:: "^linux-image-[a-z0-9]*-[a-z0-9]*$"; APT::VersionedKernelPackages ""; APT::VersionedKernelPackages:: "linux-.*"; APT::VersionedKernelPackages:: "kfreebsd-.*"; APT::VersionedKernelPackages:: "gnumach-.*"; APT::VersionedKernelPackages:: ".*-modules"; APT::VersionedKernelPackages:: ".*-kernel"; APT::Never-MarkAuto-Sections ""; APT::Never-MarkAuto-Sections:: "metapackages"; APT::Never-MarkAuto-Sections:: "tasks"; APT::Move-Autobit-Sections ""; APT::Move-Autobit-Sections:: "oldlibs"; APT::Update ""; APT::Update::Post-Invoke-Success ""; APT::Update::Post-Invoke-Success:: "/usr/bin/test -e /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.PackageKit.service && /usr/bin/test -S /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket && /usr/bin/gdbus call --system --dest org.freedesktop.PackageKit --object-path /org/freedesktop/PackageKit --timeout 4 --method org.freedesktop.PackageKit.StateHasChanged cache-update > /dev/null; /bin/echo > /dev/null"; APT::Update::Post-Invoke-Success:: "if /usr/bin/test -w /var/cache/swcatalog -a -e /usr/bin/appstreamcli; then appstreamcli refresh --source=os > /dev/null || true; fi"; APT::Architectures ""; APT::Architectures:: "amd64"; APT::Compressor ""; APT::Compressor::. Some form of unattended-upgrades is part of the default install, so I would recommend using this instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. Beside the unattended-upgrades package, apt also comes with systemd timers and services implementing regular 'update' and 'upgrade' calls. You can find more info about this in the Debian wiki: https://wiki.debian.org/UnattendedUpgrades (I know very little about it because it is usually the first thing I remove/disable as I prefer to run them manually… usually with unreleased apt versions for testing proposes. Automatic actions would interfere too much with this…) > When attempted the upgrade to 12.1, it got to the following point: > > Setting up libsystemd-shared:amd64 (252.12-1~deb12u1) ... > Setting up systemd (252.12-1~deb12u1) ... > Installing new version of config file /etc/systemd/system.conf ... > > and then stalled. It's very hard to say anything useful as there isn't much to work with – and its unlikely to really involve apt as at the point these messages are shown apt does pretty much nothing else than writing those messages to the console and to the term.log file. All the messages and hence all the work is done by dpkg which in turn instructs individual packages to do their thing. Having it not reproducible isn't helping either especially as the seemingly involved package (systemd) isn't very uncommon, so if it would be a general issue countless people would have run into it by now. The usual go to response for such unexplainable failures which aren't reproducible are hardware fault aka either dying disk or faulty RAM as upgrades are for many user machines the times they are exercised the most and the hardest. That said, you said you run this on shutdown, so I am not sure how you saw the messages, but anyway, I do have shutdown sometimes "hang" for a few minutes while systemd is busy trying to unmount remote mountpoints no longer accessible or other "silly" things. So perhaps it was something like that – or something completely different. Its really hard to tell, but given that even if it is a bug somewhere in Debian, its very unlikely to be in apt, and so for me it seems the best course of action to close this report as not actionable. If you can reproduce this in some way, pin point what happened exactly or otherwise can assign "blame" feel free to reopen (and reassign), but otherwise open or not this report would not generate any meaningful action… (compare the mass of open reports we have).
