For this test, I didn't use xft-dpi (I commented out its setting),
but:

xserver-command=X -dpi 235

This had the effect to increase the font size, but not the icon size.

I've also tried the solution given on:

  https://answers.launchpad.net/lightdm-gtk-greeter/+question/232911

i.e.

[Settings]
gtk-icon-sizes = gtk-menu=64,64

in /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini, but this had no effect.
