Yes, it does have to do with shared libraries, and how the dpkg build
process calculates them (using a program called dpkg-shlibdeps).

Of course it bitched.  It's a bug.  But the bug isn't my fault, it's a
problem with the CVS version of dpkg-shlibdeps I'm using.  I'm waiting on
Ben Collins to fix the problem.
