Please search the log for module nvidia.
grep -i -C 3 nvidia /var/log/Xorg.0.log
If you have installed package nvidia-driver in stable or testing, I
can't imagine that it is too old for any software. Nouveau should be
blacklisted by it automatically, IIRC.
