You appear to have included the "mysql>" prompt in your SQL command. Try
just the following two lines:

GRANT SELECT ON mailserver.* TO 'mailuser'@'127.0.0.1' IDENTIFIED BY
'mailuser2009';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
