Unless it's one of the older ATI cards which the free drivers
support... those older cards are maybe not the right thing for the
latest balls-to-the-wall games under windows, but for running compiz
they should be perfect -- and then you don't have to feel the nagging
guilt of supporting the gfx card makers' idiotic IP policies.

Don't remember the version nums[*], but wikipedia has exhaustive
coverage of that sort of kind.

[*] Largely because they seem to use random numbers for versions these days.
