Not sure Aaron. I did find this item in the Debian-user archive. I don't
think it is the answer to your issue though. Worth a read just as

Read it. It's not :) I forgot to mention that even before I installed display manager and just used startx it hang in the same way. I suspect the window manager fails to start but can't see why and where to look for clues.
