I think you are right. It is just too much like hard work to start fiddling
with modules at that point - especially if the networking disappears and you
have to run up and down stairs to compare with a working installation with
the help of handwritten notes.
In the mean time, I have downloaded and burnt the mepis latest install disk
(latest from the free mirror, at least). That installed without any
intervention at all from me, and works (with no problems evident
immediately).
The install to hard disk is sweeter than the knopix. ISTR that knoppix forces
an install onto one partition. Mepis lets you use two partitons. Obviously
it is not too challenging to move the bits you want to have on other
partitions afterwards. I'm quite impressed with it so far. Like knoppix, it
seems to be a mixture of testing/unstable. I'll play with it for a while
as-is, before switching to unstable.
