I solved the problem thus:
1) Removed all alsa packages.
2) Installed alsa-source
3) Built the deb package using rules binary-modules
4) apt-get installed it (apt-get automatically pulled in the alsa-base
and alsa-utils)
5) used modconf to remove the OSS driver
That did the trick. However there seems to be another warning :
intel8x0: clocking to 47423
devfs_register(audio): could not append to parent, err: -17
ALSA seq_oss.c:223: can't register device seq
Don't know what's wrong :( But alsa plays my mp3s and system sounds and
that is good news.
