wlanproblem bei t61

heo
bei meinem t61 habe ich das kernelmodul iwl4965 compiliert und auch
die firmware für die wlankarte installiert, so weit so gut.
das modul wird auch in den kernel geladen und die interfaces wmaster0
und wlan0 werden erstellt
# iwlist
wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

nur kann ich nach keinem netzwerk suchen, obwohl mein wlan aktiviert ist :
# iwlist scanning
wmaster0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
wie kann ich wlan0 aktivieren?
habe leider keine erfahrung mit wlan unter linux und hoffe dass ihr
mir helfen könnt.
