[Debian]:Umlaute in Debian

Hallo zusammen,
ich habe da ein kleines Problem: Ich kann meiner Debian kein
Schweizerdeutsches Tastaturlayout beibringen. Was ich bereits getan
habe:
1) Eine Symlink /etc/kdb/default.map.gz ->
/usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwertz/sg-latin1.map.gz
2) '/etc/init.d/keymaps.sh start' ausgeführt; läuft ohne Fehler durch.
3) Trotzdem kann ich keine Umlaute eingeben.
Ich habe eine Slink. Das ganze läuft auf einem P-120 mit 64Mbyte RAM.
In der $TERM-Variable steht 'xterm' und ich verwende die
'GNU bash, version 2.01.1(1)-release (i486-pc-linux-gnu)'. Als Tastatur
kommt ein normales Schweizerkeyboard zum Einsatz. Ich verwende kein X.
Könnt Ihr mir helfen?
