The file /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/chess/chess.sty (used
by the LaTeX files generated by Scid) uses "\input english.sty" instead
of "\usepackage[english]{babel}". This causes a lot of errors when
compiling a LaTeX file that uses the chess package. If the errors are
ignored (e.g. by using "-interaction nonstopmode"), then the compiled
document has a lot of garbage at the start.
You'll notice that the package is quite old and I'd assume that nobody will ever care to change something. Indeed on the upper right corner you'll see a note:
"The original (and now somewhat dated) TeX chess font package.Potential users should consider skak (for alternative fonts, and notation support), texmate (for alternative notation support), or chessfss (for flexible font choices)."
So you're actively pushed to other packages. Please consider to follow this recommendation.
