Hi Stewart,

you have already found the correct solution, just one comment:

> $ sudo tlmgr conf auxtrees add /usr/share/texlive/texmf-mycompany

That does not work. tlmgr can NOT be used on Debian to control
TeX Live. In fact, if you look at the output, you will see
	Running on Debian, switching to user mode.
So what you changed is
	/root/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

> $ cat /usr/share/texlive/texmf.cnf 
> TEXMFAUXTREES = /usr/share/texlive/texmf-mycompany,

This is a bit surprising though ... and should not work (but probably
tlmgr is still doing this indeed!)

The file is a link to /etc/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf which again is
updated automatically.
