Bug#748271: [latex-cjk-common] latex command did not work until I ran it once under superuser!?

Thank you.

I will send the output of the following commands later today or tomorrow (I am on a different PC in a different building)

I think my TeX installation is severely messed up as you suggested.
TeXLive and friends worked like a charm (albeit some unpleasant features) back in 2012 and I removed the packages since due to file space issues.
It is only recently that I needed to run off some TeX files in the archive and encountered really strange issues.
(But to my unaided eyes all the installation steps using aptitude succeeded.
I did not discern anything strange when the command execution finished. So I have no idea how it could be messed up like this. Silently corrupted file system?)

One thing that bothers me is that the execution of latex command under superuser last night may have healed broken link/symlink/permission, etc. once for all. I hope some traces of irregularity still remain now so that we can possibly figure out which installation failed, and make the error output from the installer better.

Thank you again for your help.

Again, I will send the output later today or tomorrow. (hopefully today. I had a kpsewhich trace during my debugging efforts, still somewhere I hope, and so will include it. I was so stumped as to why my installation could not find some files.)

Hi,

Please leave the bug report in Cc.

Fine.

Can you please send me the output of
        tlmgr conf
and
        kpsewhich -all texmf.cnf
and
        dpkg -l texlive-lang-cjk
and
        ls /var/lib/texmf/web2c/ptex/

That does not help, one needs to see whether installation succeeded.

You can try *AS*ROOT*
        fmtutil-sys --all 2>&1 | tee fmtutil-all.log
And send me
        fmtutil-all.log

Aehm, do you know how to write TeX ? ...

> My tcfmgr.map is here:
> /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/texconfig/tcfmgr.map

I know where it is.

It should be automatically generated when texlive-lang-cjk
was installed.

That is the reason why I said we need to know whether it is
properly installed

As said, your systems is severaly messed up.

Please *READ* my email and send me the requested output of the commands.

>   472  aptitude install jtex-base
>   473  aptitude install ptex-base

Both of them are not necessary, only
        texlive-lang-cjk

This file is not shipped in TeX Live.

> Is it a debian-supplied file?

No.

And that is *WHERE*?

> username@vm-debian-amd64:/home/username/Dropbox/CONFERENCE-DIR$ ls
> ./             ci-vio.txt          sigproc-sp-copy.log
> ../             ci-vio.txt~          sigproc-sp-copy.pdf
> Makefile         sig-alternate.cls    sigproc-sp-copy.tex
> Makefile~         sigproc-sp copy.pdf  texput.log
> acm_proc_article-sp.cls  sigproc-sp copy.tex

If it is in the same directory you are running latex (or platex)
then it is found.

UNLESS you have overridden some TEX* settings.

See the following on a standard TeX installation on DebianL:
[~] mkdir foo
[~] cd foo
[~/foo] ls
[~/foo] touch acm_proc_article-sp.cls
[~/foo] kpsewhich acm_proc_article-sp.cls
./acm_proc_article-sp.cls
[~/foo]

So it *does* work, unless you changed something.

No.

I repeat from the beginning: Please send the output of:
        tlmgr conf
and
        kpsewhich -all texmf.cnf
and
        dpkg -l texlive-lang-cjk
and
        ls /var/lib/texmf/web2c/ptex/
