Hmm.  I'm trying to reproduce your problem, but I haven't figured
it out yet.

The /usr/local stuff is a red herring.

What versions of the tetex-* packages do you have installed?

What happens if you type (as root) ``fmtutil --all'' (minus the
quotes, of course)?
