Thanks for the info. The section is not very helpful. First of all, Debian doesn't seem to ship alsaconf. The modules "snd_pcm_oss" and "snd_mixer_oss" are loaded (and I don't know why), but that doesn't seem to be the problem. The other things are okay.

My problem isn't so much that sound is broken (it isn't), but that some new feature always resets the master volume to zero on reboot, and I have to change it manually.
