The FAQ say something little different, that there's some difficulties
to keep in sync other architecture so can be that a "stable" i386
kernel became really stable far from .0 release.

Also this say that one can download the more recent kernel from
www.kernel.org, exactly what i've done.

This explain things much better, but involve dowloading via cvs/rsync
the unstable stabilization of stable kernel ;), and i prefer to wait
'till 2.4.X will compile. ;-)
