debian-printing is for discussing the development of the printing
system. Your query, Daniel, really needs addressing on one of the
support channels, debian-user, for example. However, you will not
be turned away empty-handed.

Apart from HP and whatever support there is with SANE I cannot come
up with a vendor to recommend who uses non-free drivers for scanning.

Your search is probably going to be successful with an HP device - or
not at all. (LP #1727056 has "Fix Committed → In Progress", whatever
that means. Debian unstable shows the M227fdn as not requiring a
plug-in. so maybe the fix hasn't made it to HPLIP yet).
