Why disable interpolation? Does this have a noticable effect on
   image quality? Merged upstream?

An additional remark to the addition of "-dNOINTERPOLATE" to Ghostscript command lines: On the Ghostscript developer mailing list a user complaint about too large output files by Ghostscript and I have tried "-dNOINTERPOLATE" on his command line solving the problem. There you find also a link to a sample PDF and all Ghostscript command lines for testing.
