There is a default session. I'm not sure exactly which distribution you
are using, but my comments are based on Debian 3.1 (Sarge). The default
session is /etc/X11/Xsession. This ends up running the code in
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/, which includes a check (in order) for the initial
programs of /usr/bin/x-session-manager, /usr/bin/x-window-manager, or
/usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator. These are hooked up through the alternatives
system to appropriate binaries. I have gnome installed, so they are
respectively gnome-session, metacity, and gnome-terminal. If you don't
have anything but the base X packages, they probably point to nothing,
twm, and xterm respectively. If you're running etch, the details may
have changed with the switch to Xorg, but the basics are probably similar.

Probably not without some configuration. The default setup for twm is
pretty simple.
