Unfortunately with this boot option, resume fails completely, whether agp or
vbetool are used or not.

I took your advice, but the results are the same, I'm afraid.

Now this is interesting. Normally the XF86 log complains that the touchpad
could not be found and that there is no such device as /dev/input/event1. But
this time it was different. Here is the relevant bit after a resume:

Quite a lot of differences, and not even consistent with what I have observed
before, esp. no mention of not finding /dev/input/event1 - although it did
not exist at the time.
I have little idea what this means!
