Another nice live-CD distro is dynabolic, for those doing music. One feature 
this one has is the ability to put a "nest" on your existing HD which is in 
effect a persistant home directory, configuration parameters, etc.

I had seen postings a long long time ago about a persistant home using 
Knoppix.

I actually had a home working running the CD in a qemu session. I had a disk 
image for this purpose. I had to create the user at every session, of course.

Implementing a "nest" would be a nice idea.
