I did notice that if I hit the power button, the screen manages to come back on during the shutdown process, probably after X exits. Setting i915.invert_brightness=1 makes it usable, but the brightness is stuck at max level; the brightness control keys don't change it (they do generate events, but the brightness is not controlled correctly).. With 3.10, the backlight was off on boot, but the control keys worked fine, so it could be turned on. Nothing relating to i915 in dmesg has changed between 3.10 and 3.11 that I can see.
