Ok, now I finally got a chance to look up the bug. So do you mean
that transfers were very slow and you got the message

	phy0 ->  rt2500pci_set_device_state: Error - Device failed to enter state 1 (-16).

?

I can't say if transfers were very slow. Unfortunately, I was only installing to test the installer, not the installed system. From the looks of it though, functionality must have been affected. In fact, after disabling the interface, I didn't succeed to bring it back up. dhclient would generate lots of errors.

As for the error messages, I didn't check well. I think the one above was the first to show, but I don't think it happened continuously as we see in David's kernel log. Other errors were more predominant.

Unfortunately, I was just installing to test another bug and I won't
be using that install - in fact, I already lost it. I may retest at
one point, and investigate more if this persists when testing's
Linux becomes current again.
Filling in between the lines: does this mean you have another network
adapter you are using instead or that you are avoiding the bug some
other way (for example by avoiding that machine altogether)?

No, this happens on the adapter of the first laptop I bought, which is now in the hands of a less demanding family member. The laptop now has Windows as its main OS. I simply used that PC to test d-i so I could keep using mine during the test.
