Package: linux-image-2.6.18-k7-4
Version: linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7
Severity: important

>From time to time it is impossible to load some kernel modules, notably
sound modules and the nvidia kernel module. The output in
/var/log/messages looks like this:

kernel: snd_rawmidi: Unknown symbol snd_seq_device_new
kernel: snd_rawmidi: Unknown symbol snd_seq_device_new
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_receive
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_transmit_ack
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_new
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_set_ops
kernel: snd_rawmidi: Unknown symbol snd_seq_device_new
kernel: snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_receive
kernel: snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_transmit
kernel: snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_seq_device_new
kernel: snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_new
kernel: snd_emu10k1: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_set_ops
kernel: snd_rawmidi: Unknown symbol snd_seq_device_new
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_receive
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_transmit_ack
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_new
kernel: snd_mpu401_uart: Unknown symbol snd_rawmidi_set_ops
kernel: snd_mpu401: Unknown symbol snd_mpu401_uart_new
(I've left out the timestamp and hostname.)

In the example above the sound device is rendered unusable since it is
impossible to modprobe snd_emu10k1 manually, it will just throw the same
error messages as above. Rebooting usually fixes the problem.

I've also experienced this problem with the nvidia module, but with
snd_emu10k1 it has happened several times.
