This worked for me.  Although I haven't got my 3c509 working yet
(haven't been conentrating on that for the moment).

I did this:

cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/hurd co \
  -d oskit-mach -r o\skit-branch -P gnumach
