It seems to be used as argument of -version-info. So it should just do the
same as setting LT_CURRENT/REVISION/AGE separately.

$ rgrep -n LIB_VERSION *
[..]
configure:2783:LIB_VERSION=0:0:0
configure.ac:13:LIB_VERSION=grits_version
[..]
src/Makefile.am:46:	-version-info $(LIB_VERSION)
