Note that it is not a move from GD to AGG... it is just the addition of AGG as an optional rendering engine. GD is still the main rendering engine in this release.
BTW, if there were long time packaging issues that you'd like to see fixed then please let us know ASAP and we may be able to fix them in time for the release if they are not too disruptive.
We are also thinking of creating a 'make install' target eventually (maybe not in this release though)... so any advice on this based on your experience would be welcome.
