I don't expect many packages to depend on the precise location of the font files in the file system at all, we have fontconfig for this. The actual transition from fonts-liberation2 to fonts-liberation (>= 1:2) will be short and painless: You literally only have to change one char in the path names. In other words, I am reluctant to add additional complexity to the transitional dummy package to ease a transition that's as complex as changing a single char in a path name for depending packages.
