Welcome to the team..:-). That's the case of about half of us.

I think I am in charge of about 20 font packages without having a
clue about how to design a font.... (OK, I have clues about package
management but, indeed, font packages are simple packages).

Oh, there's quite some serious mumbo-jumbo there, see the patch attached :-)

Seriously : it's too late unfortunately, for a new ttf-dejavu package
in Debian wheezy (the release team will never accept a new
upstreamversion at this stage of the freeze). I might however consider
revamping the package for the next Debian version, after the release
of wheezy.

I am happy if it works in testing, unstable, or even in experimental, i.e. at least there is a solution.

This is unfortunately not possible to have this in Debian wheezy.

If there's a hack to restore readability *with the current version of
the font* and a simple patch, I can try to include it, that's about
all.

I attach the patch from the upstream SVN repository.

I have no idea what the changes mean and how they interact with the rest.
I just trust the SVN comments developers left and it works for me.
