Hi Esther, thanks for your bugreport. While I agree with you in principle, the
general recommenendation today is still not to use Umlauts and other special
characters in passwords, as they might be impossible to type with a different
locale. 

But as said, in principle I agree with you. Please file a bug against kdm in
Debian, so it gets fixed there. Thanks.
