Some .js files remain static when the source is rebuilt in different languages;
however searchindex.js is not one of those files.

So it seems that the content to retrieve for it should be negotiated
between the client and server too, like the html-suffix files.

Identifying and describing the problem is part of the fix; I'll think about
it some more but I reckon there's already some relevant information from this
discussion to take upstream to Sphinx issue thread(s).
