I agree 100%.
In addition, while a C program is not architecture independent, when a
binary is compiled for a particular architecture (and I see no reason for
this program to be any more difficult than others to "port") the resulting
program is (with the exception of shared libraries) package independent,
making it useful much earlier in the install process.
