If a symlink flowerbed is where we decided we wanted to end up, I get the impression that starting from post-DEP-17 would be rather easier than starting from where we are now. DEP-17 provides us with a detailed roadmap for the first leg of that trip, whereas the route via reversion seems to be littered with unknowns at present.
