I was just reading a little about debootstrap.
Is that something which would make it simpler?
It seems to me that debootstrap is not an application that downloads all the needed core packages and installs them in lieu of having a great big fat cd-rom.

One thing that I'm interested in getting as an end result is an installation process that might stay relatively current through the next couple of years in case I have to reinstall lots of stuff. If I pick up a methodology that is going to be seen in woody & sid, I should be good for a while yet.

Otherwise, I'll look into making a minimal installation as described.
