Indeed, that's currently the only way. Still, on KfreeBSD we see this
snippet in /etc/default/grub:

| # Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries

I doubt that this works in BSD, but would be great if there was some
equivalent for kFreeBSD.
What I'm more after for my specific use case is to set the amount of
kernel reserved memory, which according to FreeBSD documentation is set
in /boot/loader.conf. I suspect that there are similar other usecases.
