If I understand you correctly, the motivation behind backporting OpenSSL is to provide the OpenSSL features (like ALPN) that are needed for a nginx backport. Correct?Almost. People asked about 1.0.2 as backports for Jessie (before 1.1.0 was released) and they got it. Now I try to keep the backports version in sync with the latest version in stable (and in future for security fixes if they should be any).
I wonder whether there is still any need for a 1.0.2 backport if OpenSSL 1.1.0 from stretch were backported instead. Isn't the package for OpenSSL 1.1.0 co-installable with the packages for OpenSSL 1.0.x?
