Did you adapt your lilo/grub config so it loads the initrd only for the
debian kernel, not for your own one?
Are you booting from a SATA disk?
It would be useful if you could give more informations about where your
system hangs. Apparently it reaches single-user, but what is failing for
the system to continue the boot process?
