I thought so too, but speakup does not work, or speakup_soft either.
I hope removing eSpeakup did not mess it up.

Glenn,

Speakup is a part of the linux kernel packages on debian, 
linux-image_SOME_VERSION. I really don't think you need to be compiling a 
linux kernel module for speakup.
