 As denoted in the merged bug downgrading to 0.9.7.2 helps for now.

Thanks for your reply. I tried your suggestion, but it fails with thesame error:
# apt-get install apt=0.9.7.2 libapt-pkg4.12=0.9.7.2
Reading package lists... Done
E: The package cache file is corrupted
