Package: apt
Version: 0.6.46.4-0.1
Severity: normal
*** Please type your report below this line ***
There are records in Packages file, that cause "Error
decoding multibyte string" message in some cases.
Two examples:
$ LC_ALL=en_US.utf8 aptitude show cadubi
Package: cadubi
State: not installed
Version: 1.2-5
Priority: optional
Section: graphics
Maintainer: Te?filo Ruiz Su?rez <teo@debian.org>Error \
decoding multibyte string
Uncompressed Size: 131k
<...skipped...>
$ LC_ALL=en_US.utf8 aptitude show libglade-perl
Package: libglade-perl
State: not installed
Version: 0.61-1
Priority: optional
Section: perl
Maintainer: R?mi Perrot <rperrot@debian.org>Error decoding \
multibyte string
Uncompressed Size: 147k
<...skipped...>
If I do
$ grep -A 5 '^Package: cadubi' /var/lib/apt/lists/\
ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_etch_main_binary-i386_Packages
I see some <?> chars in terminal in the field 'Maintainer'.
Synaptic shows for this packet in Properties->Maintainer: "N/A".
I noticed this problem when played parsing the Packages file by
sed, and got completely messed and broken output from some place
in the middle of list and far.

If they're not using UTF-8 in their debian/control fields, this is not apt's fault. I would personnally recommend an "important" severity as this is likely to corrupt the display of third-party softwareAttachment: signature.asc
