start gdm without xserver

Hi,
I use lenny. How can I start a displaymanage like gdm without
simulaneously starting the xserver. For instance:
default runlevel 2.
start gdm in rc2.d.
start xserver in rc3.d.
Any suggestions??
I apreciate any answer.
