Old school is: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/html/mnt.html "This is a generic mount point under which you mount your filesystems or devices. [...] This directory usually contains mount points or sub-directories where you mount your floppy and your CD. You can also create additional mount-points here if you wish."
Sounds contradictory. How can it be a mount point and contain mount points or sub-directories at the same time ? If you mount something on it, the sub-directories are masked.
About as old as above LFS is: http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#MNTMOUNTPOINTFORATEMPORARILYMOUNT "/mnt : Mount point for a temporarily mounted filesystem
Sounds clear : *a* *temporarily* mounted filesystem.
