Stop gdm3:
systemctl stop gdm.service
What happens with these two commands?
xinit -- vt$XDG_VTNR
(Click in the xterm and type ctrl-D to exit).
and
xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session -- vt$XDG_VTNR
